What is Gorr?
People sometimes ask me “What exactly is Gorr?” and my first response is “He’s a little devil.” Many of you know that Gorr is based on my beloved pug, Pooj, but with a devilish personality and a wicked spiked tail. The first appearances of Gorr in the comic strips are very different from the pup that is Gorr today. Recently I came across this diabolical sketch from decades back when I was drawing Zombie Boy in an anime style with more of a vicious premise. It was a demon character, a pet of Zombie Boy, who never appeared anywhere other than my sketchbook. It’s funny how there are some similarities to Gorr – the stripes are there and so is the overall body structure. It’s a bit jarring, but when I say Gorr is a little devil, well, just be glad he’s not THIS one.
Same As It Ever Was
The cartoon at the top by Maurice Ketten from 1918 reminds me of a similar strip I created back at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, which I posted below. It is interesting to note how the concept stays true and how two different cartoonists over a span of 100 years came to the same punchline. Ketten was referring to the Spanish Influenza pandemic of 1918, and I was referencing the Covid pandemic happening right now.
It’s interesting to see how a cartoon from over a hundred years ago can share the same sentiment today.
Circle Cecil Animated Comic Strip
I created this parody animated comic strip in honor of Jason Curtis and his brilliant comic strip, Square Steve. If you haven’t seen Square Steve, you definitely need to! With respect and love!
You can see another animation I created for Jason, an animated version of his fab Square Steve. See it here.
Zombie Boy by Jeff Couturier
To celebrate Zombie Boy’s 10th Anniversary, my good friend Jeff Couturier sent me this fab drawing! I’ve always loved Jeff’s skill with line and his characters always have such undeniable charm, they are hard to resist! Jeff is a comic artist, illustrator, designer, programmer, and rumor has it, a possible mutant cyborg from the future. I’ve never actually seen Jeff in person, so I can’t say, either way. Seeing ZB through his gifted talent is a super thrill, thanks, Jeff! You can see Jeff’s astounding work at Jeff Couturier.
