Clarion Call
Pets just know. My dog can hear the crinkle of a potato chip bag the minute I put my hands on it, and by the time the bag starts tearing, he’s right at my feet, tongue hanging out, anticipating the coming feast. I guess it must be something in that material they use to contain junk food, it’s usually quite noisy to the touch, which makes it the perfect alarm for any alert four-legged gourmand within earshot.
This strip is so true to life. Dixie can be sound asleep on the longe but make the slightest crinkle sound in the kitchen & she’s onto you.
Nothing escapes their hearing when it comes to treats!
Junk food for beats? fresh meat? XD
Fresh meat, sure! But they’ll settle for cheese puffs!
And in this household, that can put you in epic danger!
You got that right!
What if… the potato chip companies design them to do that on purpose so you go through them faster, so you buy more. Potato chip conspiracy exposed!
Maybe there’s a hidden chemical element that makes a noise on a level humans can’t hear but is irresistible to pets! You might be on to something, Brian!
That works even faster than the famouse “spider sense”, and alerts every pet in the house! Awesome. 8)
Their “snack sense” is tingling! Love it!
My dog is like that with the fridge door. It’s spooky. She just suddenly appears. Scares the living daylights out of me usually.
ROLFE
Don’t let them fool you, they are ALWAYS listening for the snack cue!
Our cats will ignore anything. But somehow they know when I open the sliced turkey bag and come running
Selective hearing. I have a friend with this problem, he only hears what he wants to hear…
What??
See what I mean.
I have to say, while my animals do come running, I’ve yet to have a lizard or snake show up! [blinks] …and if they did, you’d hear my screams!
The next rip we’d hear is your pants caught on the window sill.
Dogs are definitely junk food junkies!
That makes two of us!
Wait I think I hear a bag of chips. I’m off! 🙂
I hope it’s cheese puffs!
That sound gets everyone running!
It worked for Pavlov’s dog, too!
That’s how my dog used to do. He wouldn’t respond to his name, but as soon as that bag started to open his ears perked up
They always hear the important sounds!
Before you get into the house, you need to transfer your potato chips to an air-tight jar. That should fool them!
Very sly, Peter. It might work for a while, but I can’t help to think they would get used to hearing the jar open eventually, though…
Makes it a handy alert for us two-legged types as well! Hilarious strip, Mark. Love the way you do the critters. :`D
Thanks, Jande. There’s no other sound quite like junk food wrappers, that’s the truth!
Yep, that’s some nice Pavlovian conditioning there 😉
I think it’s more like Frito-Lay conditioning!
Haven’t been here in a while, a lot of comics to catch up on…it’s going to be a joy. Still loving your work Mark!
Thanks Aleksandar! Glad to see you back, can’t wait to see more work from you!
Morgan has a lot of pets!
You can’t have just one!
My dog used to do the same thing, but only for skittles.
To each his own snack!
Haha so true. That or the sound or metal chains clanking around. (walkie time lol)
One thing’s for sure, there’s nothing better than a dog smile!
Just say “bath” or “vet” and watch them all disappear!
You get the same exact reaction, but in reverse!
I just have to think about the kitchen and my big dog is sitting at the edge of the room, waiting for his treat!
The kitchen is a pet epicenter.
Hahaha! My two kids must have gone to the same obedience school. They react to everything from wrapper crinklings to soda can poppings. 😀
They know what they like!
Omg, this is what our chinchillas do when we make that same noise!
No animal on the planet can resist the sound of a junk food wrapper!
