Something Wicked This Way Comes

I published my first Zombie Boy comic book in 1987, at the tail end of the black and white self-publishing comic book explosion, with subsequent issues along the years into the 90s. There’s nothing like the thrill of seeing your comic book on a real comic rack in a comic book shop! Those were heady days, and I’m really glad I was able to participate. It was a great experience.

Panel Me This!

Zombie Boy keeps dying and coming back again, now he’s back as a comic strip, and I’m having a lot of fun. I thought the format would be constricting, because I’m used to telling longer stories, but surprisingly it’s those limitations that charge me up. Many years ago in art school I was lucky to have the late, great Jerry Bittle as a cartoon instructor, and at the time he was in the formulative years of his hilarious Geech strip. I remember thinking, this stuff is great but I could never be restricted to a comic strip, I imagined how totally unsuited I was to that limiting artform. I always enjoyed reading them, but I never had any inclination of doing them. Things have certainly changed!
